We compare survey responses of business owners with available data from administrative tax records, brokered private business sales, and publicly traded company filings and document problems due to nonrepresentative samples and measurement errors across several surveys, subsamples, and years. We find that the discrepancies are economically relevant for the statistics of interest. We investigate reasons for these discrepancies and propose corrections for future survey designs. <p> <p> Data and code for peer-reviewed article published in American Economic Review.$$7Abstract 000004229 540__ $$aCreative Commons Attribution 4.0 International$$uhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode$$fCC-BY-4.0 000004229 7001_ $$aBhandari, Anmol$$7Personal$$uUniversity of Minnesota 000004229 7001_ $$aBirinci, Serdar$$7Personal$$uFederal Reserve Bank of St. Louis 000004229 7001_ $$aMcGrattan, Ellen$$7Personal$$uUniversity of Minnesota 000004229 7001_ $$aSee, Kurt$$7Personal$$uBank of Canada$$3https://ror.org/05cc98565$$5ROR 000004229 791__ $$aJournalArticle$$eIsSupplementTo$$iReproducibility package is associated with peer-reviewed article$$w10.1257/aeri.20190304$$c2020$$dAmerican Economic Review: Insights (American Economic Association)$$tWhat Do Survey Data Tell Us about US Businesses?$$2DOI$$j2$$k4$$q443$$o458 000004229 791__ $$aText$$eIsSupplementTo$$iAssociated article is published as Bank of Canada Staff Working Paper$$w10.34989/swp-2019-45$$c2019$$dBank of Canada$$tWhat Do Survey Data Tell Us About US Businesses?$$2DOI$$jStaff Working Paper$$k2019-45 000004229 791__ $$aDataset$$eIsNewVersionOf$$c2020-03-03$$tData and Code for: What Do Survey Data Tell Us about US Businesses?$$dAmerican Economic Association$$w10.3886/E117021V3$$2DOI 000004229 791__ $$aDataset$$eIsNewVersionOf$$c2020-03-03$$tData and Code for: What Do Survey Data Tell Us about US Businesses?$$dAmerican Economic Association$$w10.3886/E117021V2$$2DOI 000004229 791__ $$aDataset$$eIsNewVersionOf$$c2020-03-01$$tData and Code for: What Do Survey Data Tell Us about US Businesses?$$dAmerican Economic Association$$w10.3886/E117021V1$$2DOI 000004229 8301_ $$aReproducibility Package 000004229 8301_ $$aEnsemble de données pour la reproductibilité des résultats de recherche 000004229 909CO $$ooai:www.oar-rao.bank-banque-canada.ca:4229$$pbibliographic 000004229 937__ $$aBhandari, A., S.
