Canada provides a favorable setting for analysis due to its high linguistic diversity, concentrated market, and regulatory entry barriers. We find that cultural affinity between customers and financial institutions that share a common cultural origin plays an important role in explaining the comparative advantages of these institutions in certain markets. Using several counterfactual experiments and additional empirical evidence, we show that the effectiveness of regulations intended to foster competition are significantly limited by cultural barriers, which is a key determinant that shapes the competitive landscape of the industry. <p><p> Data and code for peer-reviewed article published in American Economic Journal: Microeconomics.$$7Abstract 000003991 540__ $$aCreative Commons Attribution 4.0 International$$uhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode$$fCC-BY-4.0 000003991 7001_ $$aPerez-Saiz, Hector$$7Personal$$uInternational Monetary Fund 000003991 7001_ $$aXiao, Hongyu$$7Personal$$uBank of Canada$$3https://ror.org/05cc98565$$5ROR 000003991 791__ $$aJournalArticle$$eIsSupplementTo$$iReproducibility package is associated with peer-reviewed article$$w10.1257/mic.20180044$$c2022$$dAmerican Economic Journal: Microeconomics (American Economic Association)$$tCultural Affinity, Regulation, and Market Structure: Evidence from the Canadian Retail Banking Industry$$2DOI$$j14$$k1$$q451$$o489 000003991 8301_ $$aReproducibility Package 000003991 8301_ $$aEnsemble de données pour la reproductibilité des résultats de recherche 000003991 909CO $$ooai:www.oar-rao.bank-banque-canada.ca:3991$$pbibliographic 000003991 937__ $$aPerez-Saiz, H. and H.
